“Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly that at first almost no one noticed – fading away like water on a stone.”

Published in October 2017, The Lost Words, created by Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, began as a beautiful protest at the erosion of our connection with the wonders of the natural world around us, celebrating twenty creatures and plants through poetry and art, with: “spells of many kinds that might just, by the old strong magic of being spoken aloud, unfold dreams and songs, and summon lost words back into the mouth and the mind’s eye.”

In 2019, an exquisite musical companion piece, The Lost Words: Spell Songs was created, ‘where musicians unfold the “dreams and songs” living within the pages of the book,’ giving their own evocative interpretations, together with further wonderful art work and spells from Jackie and Robert.

Jackie Morris - Robert Macfarlane - The Lost SpellsThe Lost Spells, a companion in spirit and tone to The Lost Words, evokes the wonder of everyday nature in musical, magical spells and illustrations that flow between the pages and into readers’ minds and hearts: summoning spells, words of recollection, charms of protection, written to be read aloud.

The Lost Spells celebrates a sense of wonder, bearing witness to nature's power to amaze, console and bring joy, together with an awareness of what happens if we allow it to slip away.
